Midland Christian School Choir Director

Position Expectation Summary

 

4th Grade Choir (Fall Semester only)

  • Five 4th grade homerooms that each meet once per week for the fall semester
  • This is an introduction to choir and band, so that they can make a choice for 5th grade
  • Performances are at the discretion of the director

 

5th Grade Choir

  • Fifth grade choir will meet 3 days per week all together
  • Performances and competition participation are at the discretion of the choir director

 

Middle School Choirs

  • Ideally, there will be three Middle School Choirs: 
    • 6th Grade (Beginner) Girls Choir
    • 7th & 8th Grade (Advanced) Girls Choir
    • Middle School Boys Choir
  • Participation in TMEA All-Region Choir is at the discretion of the choir director
  • Participation in TAPPS Solo & Small Ensemble Competition recommended
  • Participation in large ensemble music festival recommended (Irons Music Festival)

 

High School Choir(s)

  • Historically, we have only had one choir for high school, which can be divided into multiple choirs (Mixed, Treble, Tenor-Bass) for large, medium, and small ensembles
  • If you would like to implement an auditioned show-choir, that is up to you as a director
  • Participation in TMEA All-Region/All-State Choir competition is at the discretion of the choir director
  • Participation in TAPPS Solo, Small, Medium, and Large ensemble competitions

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Instruction & Conducting: Direct rehearsals, teach proper vocal technique, rhythm, pitch, and harmony, and conduct choir members in performances.
  • Curriculum & Repertoire: Develop lesson plans aligned with state music standards, choose suitable music, and teach music literacy.
  • Logistics & Admin: Schedule performances, manage the music library, coordinate uniforms, manage the budget, and oversee fundraising.
  • Student Growth: Audition students, select soloists, and foster a love for music while mentoring vocal development.
  • Community Engagement: Prepare for school events, competitions, and community performances, potentially including, but not limited to Grandparents Day, Veteran’s Day, Fall Concert, Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, TMEA All-Region / All-State, TAPPS Solo, Small Ensemble, Medium, and Large Ensemble competitions, the Spring Musical Production, and end of year concert/banquet. There is also (for next year) the option to direct the One-Act Play in the Fall.



Key Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field, often with state teaching certification.

Skills

  • Proficiency on piano for rehearsals, understanding of vocal pedagogy, strong leadership, recruitment skills, classroom management, and communication skills.

Common Duties

  • Direct all school choirs and manage rehearsals.
  • Ensure compliance with school board policy and state education rules.
  • Plan competition travel, tours, festivals, and extracurricular activities.
  • Collaborate with other staff on school musicals or performances.
